Social entrepreneurs mix business, mission – 12/15/08
From the article: Current thinking suggests entrepreneurs can have a bigger impact with a for-profit firm, said Daniel Diermeier, professor of management and co-founder of the social enterprise program at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. "In many cases, it is easier to attract capital for a for-profit venture," Diermeier said. "Attracting that capital will allow them to grow faster, have a bigger impact and be better managed." If the product or service won't be profitable but is filling a valuable need in society, consider a non-profit. Most charities qualify for tax-exempt status, but keep in mind that there's no equity in a non-profit, so founders become employees and won't build personal wealth from the enterprise beyond their salaries.
